GFJA is committed  to the preservation of historical and important photographs for public use.  It achieves it’s objective by publishing books, catalogues, posters and limited portfolios from it’s exhibitions in addition to it’s Permanent Collection which now consists of more than 400 prints by international photographers encompassing the history, politics, economy, culture and natural life of Indonesia from the 19th century to the present time.  Accordingly, GFJA is the first institution in Indonesia to initiate the immense work of tracing the country’s unique and evidently ancient photo history.

The 150 years of Photography in Indonesia Traveling Celebration project consists of two parts, “The Gilded Cage” and “In The Miracle Years” that will record the history of Indonesia through images from the colonial times until the independence war, civil strife, the period of prosperity and political reform.  It commenced with the traveling exhibitions Woodbury and Page : Photographers Java at the Erasmus Huis in 1994 and in Miracle Years : Photographs from the Independence Period 1945-1950 in Yogyakarta, Surabaya and Ujungpandang in 1995-1996.  As a consequence of this project GFJA will establish the first photo conservation program in Indonesia in 1999 with the support of Ford Foundation and photography museums in Australia, USA and the Netherlands.

Drawing great public attention previously, Fantasma is being reincarnated in the near future.  The magazine is believed to be an effective tools in increasing people’s appreciation for photography.
